It is an event where people team up to code something new and exciting in a short period of time. At START Hack, the hacking starts at midnight on Friday and takes 35 hours until Sunday morning. Amazing prizes and an exclusive participation at START Summit 2016 await you.
Any student or recent graduate may apply from any university in the world, you do not need to study in a programming related field. We are also looking for mentors with hackathon experience.
Several sleeping rooms, sofas and mattresses will be available for you. However, it is best to come prepared. Sleep well beforehand and feel free to bring your own sleeping bag. Teams that are invited to the START Summit will be accommodated for free after the hackathon.
You can work on whatever you want. Work on a provided challenge, combine data or APIs from different companies or work on your own project. However, you are not allowed to start working before the event, since this will be unfair for the other teams. Your projects will be evaluated by an experienced jury in the end.
START Hack is very beginner friendly, there will be plenty of mentors and a range of workshops to help you out before and during the hacking. You also don’t need to have an idea before you arrive.
The main prizes are experiences and friendships with great, innovative students that last for your lifetime. You can also win several company prizes, big cash prizes and might be invited to the START Summit for free, to showcase your project in front of 1500 people. More details will be announced soon.
If you can’t find your question in this FAQ or have a other query please feel free to contact us via email
Thanks to our partners, attendance is completely free. We will provide you with as much food and drinks as you need and we will even be able to reimburse some of your travel costs.
START Hack will take place from the 17th to the 19th of March 2017 at the University of St. Gallen, Switzerland, which is only a 15-minute walk away from the St. Gallen railway station. You can travel to St. Gallen by bus or train, while close airports are in Altenrhein, Zurich and Basel.
Bring your laptop, charger and other gadgets you might use for your project. Don’t forget motivation and creativity.
The challenges give a context or background to APIs and data that are provided only at START Hack by our partner companies in the areas of Blockchain, AI, Internet of Things and VR / AR. You qualify for a specific company prize, additionally to the main prizes, if you use one of the services, even if you work on something completely different.
Teams consist of four people. You may apply as a single person or as a team, and there will be a team building process before the hacking starts, so that incomplete teams will be full and single people can team up together.
We will provide you with reimbursements as fair as possible. After all applications have been accepted, all successful applicants will be contacted with specifics about reimbursement details.
START Hack is organized by a team passionate about technology and entrepreneurship from START Global in Switzerland, which also organizes the annual START Summit (www.startsummit.ch).
